Pharmacognosy of Cassia Alata Linn – leaves
Cassia alata Linn, Commonly known as semaiagathi in Tamil is well known for its various medicinal properties in Indian systems of medicine. Various parts of this plant are used as vermicide, astringent, purgative, expectorant and to treat skin diseases. Two new glycosides, chrysoeriol-7-O-(2"-O-beta-D-mannopyranosyl)-beta-D-allopyranos ide and rhamnetin-3-O-(2"-O-beta-D-mannopyranosyl)-beta-D-allopyranosid e, were isolated from the seeds of Cassia alata. The structures were established on the basis of chemical evidence and spectroscopic methods, especially NMR.

The methanol extracts of leaves, flowers, stem and root barks of Cassia alata showed a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The activity was increased on fractionation (petrol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate), the dichloromethane fraction of the flower extract being the most effective. No activity was shown against tested moulds.
